In 2012, while the proposed Directive was still under examination by the European Parliament, the Commission launched a call for proposals aiming to establish Passenger Information Units (PIUs) in the Member States, under its 2007-2013 programme ‘Prevention of and Fight against Crime’ (ISEC).
