According to Eurostat data, life expectancy at birth in the EU-27 was estimated at 81.0 years in 2018, reaching 83.7 years for women and 78.2 years for men. Compared to data from 2002 (the first year for which life expectancy data became available for all EU Member States), life expectancy in the EU- 27 had increased by 3.3 years (from 77.7 to 81.0); the increase was by 2.8 years for women and 3.9 years for men (see Figure 4).
