According to data provided to Eurostat by four of these providers (Airbnb, Booking, Expedia and Tripadvisor), about 1.4 million guests stayed in short-term accommodation in the EU on a random night in 2019. In total, guests spent about 512 million nights in short-stay accommodation in 2019. As seen from the map below, however, the distribution of guests is neither equal across the EU, nor within individual countries. While guests stayed a total 47 000 nights in short-term accommodation in the French region of Limousin in 2019, they stayed 1 566 000 nights in the Île de France region (33 times more than in Limousin). Looking at the distribution by type of accommodation, short-term accommodation rentals represent about one quarter of the total EU supply of tourist accommodation. During the peak of the COVID 19 pandemic, the guest nights spent at short-term accommodation dropped considerably: 272 million nights in 2020 and 364 million nights in 2021.
