As concerns transatlantic trade, royalties and licence fees based on IPRs were among the top five services traded between the EU and the US in 2012 (see figure 1). Royalties and licence fees were the second EU services import from the US (€24 billion) and the fifth services export to the US (€15 billion) in 2012. Finally, the prospects which IPRs represent for SMEs are a constant preoccupation in the EU and the US alike.
