Types of Political Action Committees (PACs)

Political committees are essential to federal elections, as they are the highest campaign
spenders. They are regulated by the FECA, and therefore subject to FECA’s limits on
contributions (prohibited sources and amount), and comprise:
Candidate committees (the principal campaign committee and other authorised
committees of the candidate) authorised by the candidate to raise contributions
and make expenditure on their behalf; Party committees (national or state/local party committees); Political action committees (PACs), which are neither authorised committees nor party committees. There are several types of PACs.
