Thirteen EU and associated countries oversee the EU’s external land borders, which cover 9 636 km. Of these, 10 countries (all except Romania, Croatia and Slovakia) have started building fences at the EU’s external borders. As of December 2023, these fences covered 1 522 km (16 % of the EU’s external land borders), with most having been built after 2015
