According to the Commission, one of the key challenges of the visa-free regime is that it can lead to increased irregular migration through overstays by visa-free travellers or through asylum applications lodged in high numbers by nationals from visa-free third countries with low recognition rates. Eurostat data confirms the increase in the number of applications for international protection from nationals of visa-free countries, although at a lesser pace than the increase in the total number of asylum applications (see Figure 1).
