Migration challenges can also arise from insufficient alignment with the EU visa policy, which can turn a visa-free country into a transit hub for irregular entry into the EU. For example, in 2022, the European Border and Coast Guard Agency (Frontex) recorded a sudden surge in the number of detections of irregular entries along the Western Balkans route (a 134 % increase compared to the previous year) (see Figure 2). This prompted the EU to ask Western Balkans countries to further align their visa policies with its own.
