Irregular EU border crossings

Figure 1 shows that, in 2022, more than 33 500 children were detected while crossing the EU’s external borders irregularly, more than 15 800 of them unaccompanied (i.e. they arrived on EU territory unaccompanied by an adult responsible for them). This was the highest annual number of children detected crossing the EU’s external borders irregularly in recent years. The lowest annual number was in 2020, which showed the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the number of children arriving in the EU, as highlighted by the European Border and Coast Guard Agency (Frontex).
