Figure 6 shows the number of first-time applications for international protection in the EU since 2013, and the share among them lodged by children aged under 14 and from 14 to 17. Children represented 24.4 % of all applicants in the EU in 2023 (i.e. 255 000), which makes 2023 the year with the most first-time child applicants since the previous peak in 2016. The majority of child applicants in 2023 were boys (59 %).
