Defence and security is often mentioned as an obvious field where the EU and UK have a common interest in tighter cooperation. The UK is a nuclear power with strong military and intelligence capacity and the third biggest provider of military support to Ukraine (see Figure 5 below). It is also the leader of one of the three military clusters complementing NATO – a Joint Expeditionary Force, which aims to protect northern Europe. On the other hand, the UK is concerned that it will be left out of the ongoing revival of security and defence policies (including industrial capacity-building) in the EU.
