Women make up a small minority in national militaries. UN and NATO data show that women’s participation has increased over the past decade. In 2022, the average share of women in the armed forces of NATO member and partner states was 12.7 %, up from 10.3 % in 2014. The trend is negative in some countries (see Figure 3). NATO data and analysis by the European Institute for Gender Equality (EIGE) show that women are under-represented among officers, particularly in senior ranks.
