Catches by Greenlandic vessels, by area (in thousands of tonnes, 2023)

Figure 3 shows the total 2023 catches by Greenlandic vessels (i.e. excluding foreign catches in Greenlandic waters, but including Greenlandic catches in foreign waters). In total, Greenlandic vessels caught 334 000 tonnes, of which 114 000 tonnes in external waters:
• the catches in Icelandic waters were of capelin (this fishery is currently closed, see below);
• on the high seas (international waters), Greenlandic vessels mainly catch mackerel and herring;
• in the Faroese waters, catches are mainly blue whiting, but also herring;
• in the Barents Sea, Greenland is granted quotas by Norway, mainly for cod, but also for haddock and saithe.
