Fisheries management changed drastically at the end of the 1970s, following the international trend to claim sovereignty over so-called exclusive economic zones (EEZs). These zones represented an extension of national waters up to 200 nautical miles from the coast. The declaration of a Greenlandic EEZ in 1977 and the home rule of 1979 gave Greenland control over its fishery resources. Other countries in the area have also declared EEZs (Figure 1).
