Overall, EU imports of goods from the UK have decreased significantly during the same period – by 9.2 %, from €181.1 billion in 2023 to €164.5 billion in 2024. The types of goods imported have also fluctuated over the past four years of the TCA’s implementation. More precisely, the EU’s main imported goods from the UK in 2023 included oil, gas and coal (21.1 %), mechanical appliances and electrical equipment (16.7 %), and vehicles and aircraft (13.6 %). The growing importance of the oil, gas and coal sector in the EU imports basket from the UK in 2023 is due to the energy crisis generated by Russia’s war on Ukraine. As Figure 7 illustrates, however, after an exceptional year in 2023, when oil and gas became the main EU-imported products from the UK, and following the balancing of energy prices, these products fell back to second place in 2024 (17.2 %). The data also shows that the EU’s trade in goods with the UK has become more diversified in recent years.
