Remittances play a key role in alleviating poverty. Globally, one in nine people – about 800 million people – are supported by funds sent by migrant workers. It is estimated that three quarters of the money sent is used for essential things like food, housing, medical expenses and education, while the remainder is either saved or invested in activities that can generate further income. Figure 3 shows the top 10 countries receiving international remittances in 2022. France and Germany are most likely featured because of the salaries of people working in Switzerland while living in France or Germany.
