Economists expect female unemployment to rise in the second part of the recession as sectors in which they work are expected to be affected. As such, deteriorating consumer spending is likely to have a more important effect on the retail business. Furthermore, governments’ deficit reduction strategies, including pay cuts and redundancies, will affect the public sector, along with the health, care and education sectors. Women are more often employed in the health, social and education sectors whilst construction, trans-port and manufacturing are male-dominated.
