National experts (e.g. from EL, IE, PT) agree that austerity measures such as staffing cuts in the public sector are likely to have a direct effect on female employment levels as their representation in these jobs is higher than in the commercial sector. Women’s organi-sations argue that in EL, ES, and PT austerity measures also significantly affected employ-ment in female-dominated sectors such as education, health and social services. In all four countries, after progress recorded up to 2008, women’s employment rates have fallen below, or close to, 2005 levels.
