Though close to its historic high, the labour force is shrinking (down 0.2% from 2012 to 2013). In the medium term, natural growth in the working age population will remain negative as the demographic dip of the 1990s continues to feed through. However, longer-term trends are more positive, with the fertility rate currently at its highest ever post-Soviet level and natural growth (births – deaths) of the total population positive for the first time in two decades.
