In 2012, 2.3 billion tonnes of waste (or about 4.6 tonnes per capita) were treated in the European Union (EU). ‘Mineral and solidified waste’ (mainly soils, construction and demolition waste) accounts for almost three quarters of the total weight of waste treated. ‘Mixed ordinary waste’ (mainly household and similar waste) accounts for 10% of total waste, while recyclable wastes (metal, wood, paper/cardboard, glass, plastics, rubber and textile) account for 5%.
