Fossil fuels account for over 70% of primary energy production in EnC states (see Figure 2). Solid fossil fuels, mainly coal or domestic lignite, account for around half of this total. Nuclear power accounts for a quarter of the EnC energy mix, yet in practice only Ukraine generates electricity from nuclear (its population is larger than all the other CS combined). Less than 6% of energy production in the region comes from renewable sources.
