As seen in Figure 3, distribution of water withdrawal for the largest water-consuming sector, agriculture, accounts for 87.2% in the region. Uzbekistan consumes 56 km3 of water per year which is almost 45% of the total volume of the region, 124 km3. This amount is relatively high; twice the total consumption of the second biggest consumer, Turkmenistan. In terms of distribution by sector, Uzbekistan’s agriculture sector accounts for 90%, while industrial use is barely 2.7%. The total water consumption of the upstream countries, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan, accounts for only 15.6% – almost one third of Uzbekistan’s consumption.
