Contribution limits for federal elections in 2015-2016

In federal elections, the distinction between contributions (i.e. anything of value given,
loaned or advanced to influence a federal election) and independent expenditure (IE) is crucial. While contributions are limited by federal law, IE expressly advocating the election or defeat of a clearly identified candidate, but spent without any coordination with a candidate’s campaign, may be unlimited. Individuals and entities are nevertheless required to disclose their IEs to the FEC.
