The US net international investment position decreased to -US$8 109.7 billion (preliminary) at the end of the fourth quarter of 2016 from -US$7 807.3 billion (revised) at the end of the third quarter, according to statistics released on 29 March 2017 by the Bureau of Economic Analysis. The US GDP for the first quarter of 2017 is stated to be US$19 027 billion, consequently NIIP is around 43 % of US GDP. This is a very significant number, and poses a question as to whether the downward trend of US negative NIIP is sustainable (to simplify, the question of valuation changes has been excluded).
