To increase turnout in US elections, many states have introduced new or more convenient means for casting votes. Overall, three methods are used:• 45 states and the District of Columbia allow early voting in person during a designated period before Election Day.3 16 states require absentee voters to provide a qualifying reason.
• All states mail absentee ballot papers to voters at their request (justification is required in 20 states).• Postal ballot papers are automatically mailed to voters eligible for mail voting. Seven states – Colorado, Hawaii, Nevada, Oregon, Utah, Vermont and Washington have all-mail voting, meaning that all eligible voters receive a ballot that can be returned by mail or dropped off during the early voting period.Prior to the November 2020 elections, a number of states made it easier to vote by mail, in response to the pandemic. However, following those elections and the defeat of President Donald Trump, several states have moved to tighten voting regulations.
