In 2022, EAC countries accounted for 0.1 % of EU imports and 0.2 % of its exports, whilst the EU represented an important share of EAC trade: 10.0 % (€4.2 billion) of the EAC’s imports from the rest of the world and 14.0 % (€2.3 billion) of its exports. In total trade (exports + imports) the EU is the EAC’s 4th partner (11.1%) after China (17.2%), the United Arab Emirates (12.5%) and India (11.4%).
Kenya represents nearly half of EU imports from the EAC and more than half of its exports to the EAC (figure 2).
Kenya’s main imports from the EU are mineral and chemical products, and machinery. Kenya’s main exports to the EU are agricultural and horticultural products (fruit and vegetables, cut flowers). This pattern is similar for other EAC countries. EAC manufactured products are mainly exported within Africa, mostly within the EAC itself.
