With regard to the return of third-country nationals who are not authorised to stay in the EU, data from Eurostat show stable trends, with respect to the numbers of both return decisions and effective returns (see Figure 2). It is notable that of the reported 4.4 million people ordered to leave in the 2011-2019 period, less than half (43 %, i.e. 1.9 million) were effectively returned.
