Weather conditions is the primary factor determining agricultural productivity. El Niño can disrupt normal rainfall patterns. Water scarcity can lead to crop and pasture failures, reduced agricultural yields, and an increased occurrence and severity of wildfires. Excessive rainfall destroys crops and critical infrastructure. El Niño also influences ocean temperatures and currents, disrupting fisheries, and impacting the livelihoods of coastal communities. Finally, even the expectation of reduced agricultural production can lead countries to protect domestic markets by restricting food exports, increasing global food prices and food insecurity in import-dependent countries.
