According to the United Nations Refugee Agency (UNHCR), the global refugee population reached 35.8 million in 2023 –up from 20 million in 1990. Despite growing numbers, the share of refugees in the global population has been relatively stable since 1990. Refugees made up 0.38 % of the global population in 1990 and 0.34 % in 2021 – before rising to 0.44 % in 2022
