According to data from the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UN DESA), between 1990 and 2020, the number of international migrants rose from 153 million to 281 million. Given that the global population grew significantly in the same period (from 5.3 billion to 7.8 billion), the share of migrants in the global population increased only slightly – from 2.9 % to 3.6 %
