The Global Report on Food Crises (GRFC) shows that the main drivers of food insecurity (see Figure 2) are conflict, economic shocks and weather extremes, which often compound one another. In 2023, 281.6 million people in the 59 countries and territories surveyed by the Global Report on Food Crises (GRFC) experienced acute food insecurity. This is, on average, more than one person in five, but represented more than half of the analysed population in Syria (55 %), Yemen (56 %), South Sudan (63 %) and 100 % of the population of the Gaza Strip since the beginning of the Israeli offensive in October 2023, following the deadly Hamas-led attacks.
