Economic Outlook Quarterly

In recent years, the EU has faced a series of major shocks, from the COVID-19 pandemic and the ongoing consequences of Russia’s war against Ukraine to inflation and energy market turmoil. These pressures have tested the EU and its Member States’ ability to balance shrinking fiscal space with the need to boost investment and reform incentives. There is little argument however that governments need to tackle the threats to growth and productivity posed by demographic change, legacy debt, weak investment and innovation, and a fragmenting geopolitical landscape. As a result, strengthening EU competitiveness is a key focus of economic policy.

EPRS has regularly charted the state of the EU economy since 2022. This well-established series of infographics now tracks the state of the EU economy on a quarterly basis. Each snapshot looks at GDP growth in the Member States, consolidated gross government debt and net borrowing, as well as inflation and monetary policy. It examines the dynamics of EU national labour markets and the unemployment rate. Finally, the infographics monitor the roll-out of the ground-breaking Next Generation EU (NGEU) and its Recovery and Resilience Facility (RRF) since their inception in 2020.
