With European elections coming up in May 2019, you probably want to know how the European Union impacts your daily life, before you think about voting. In the latest in a series of posts on what Europe does for you, your family, your business and your wellbeing, we look at what Europe does for adult educators.
If you teach adults, you are on the frontline of a multitude of growing challenges for adult education. These challenges include the need to help the active working population to adjust their skills to shifting job requirements, and low-skilled unemployed workers to upgrade theirs. Adult educators help societies to face challenges such as supporting older adults to connect to an increasingly digitalised world, and integrating migrants into their new environment. Responding adequately to these needs requires innovative training methods, intercultural/intergenerational education, digital skills and an ability to teach and learn foreign languages.
The European Erasmus+ programme offers you opportunities to enhance your skills through exchange programmes that help you become better equipped to cope with these challenges. In 2016, more than 5 000 adult educators were trained abroad under this programme, with average funding of €1 430 per participant.
Exchange programmes for adult educators take three different forms: you can participate in structured courses or training events abroad, you may try out job shadowing that creates an opportunity for you to spend a period abroad in an organisation active in adult education, or you could take on a teaching or training assignment of between two days and two months at a partner organisation abroad. In 2016, a total of 406 of these projects took place. Why not try one yourself?
