From 1 July 2013 Lithuania is taking over the Presidency of the Council of the European Union from Ireland and will hold it until January 2014, when the Presidency will be passed to Greece. The Declaration of Cooperation among the Houses of the Parliaments of Ireland, Lithuania and Greece in support of the preparation and fulfilment of the parliamentary dimension of the Presidencies was signed on 20 April 2012.

The three main objectives of the Lithuanian presidency six month programme will be to create a credible, growing and open Europe. In addition, The Seimas Resolution provides that the priority spheres of the Lithuanian presidency of the Council of the EU should include: 1) Energy security; 2) Effective implementation of the European Union strategy for the Baltic Sea Region 3) Eastern Partnership 4) Strengthening of the EU external borders. More information on the upcoming Lithuanian Presidency’s priorities can be found on the Presidency website.

During its EU presidency Lithuania is planning to host about 180 presidency events including 16 ministerial level meetings. The biggest event – the Summit meeting of the Eastern Partnership countries (Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Moldova and Ukraine) will be held in Vilnius on November 28-29, 2013.
